It is a time of freedom and fear, of Gaia and of borders, of many paths and the widening of a universal toll road, emptying country and swelling cities, of the public bought into privacy and the privacy of the public sold into invisible data banks and knowing algorithms. It is the time of the warrior's peace and the miser's charity, when the planting of a seed is an act of conscientious objection.

These are the times when maps fade and direction is lost. Forwards is backwards now, so we glance sideways at the strange lands through which we are all passing, knowing for certain only that our destination has disappeared. We are unready to meet these times, but we proceed nonetheless, adapting as we wander, reshaping the Earth with every tread.

Behind us we have left the old times, the standard times, the high times. Welcome to the irregular times.

CBC Breaking News: UN report on civilian casualties to remain out of public hands
From tonight's "As It Happens":

"The first draft suggested the US military tried to cover up after an airstrike at an Afghan wedding. Today, the UN released the official, final report.
The document went directly to the American and Afghani governments. And that's where it will remain - out of the public eye."

This is a "Good War," Right?

Breaking News: UN accuses US military of deliberately covering up civilian casualties

Story from Reuters:

"The Times quoted the report as saying that coalition forces had arrived on the scene very quickly after the airstrikes and "cleaned the area," removing evidence of shrapnel, bullets and traces of blood.

U.S. forces had also committed human rights violations by tying up the hands of women at the scene, the paper said."

Mother Davis squares her chin and steels her eyes in determination as she reports:

An un-named detainee held on unknown charges questioned in an undisclosed location some time within the last three months has revealed to secret military operatives the details of a consipracy to bring shipping on the Great Lakes to a halt by completely draining one of the lakes of all its water. Secretary of Defense Donald Rumsfeld admitted that the military interrogators have been unable to acquire any specific information about the time, location and method of the planned attack, but from have assembled a team of top analysts to extrapolate from the information available and create predictions so that the public can be adequately warned.

This afternoon, the team of Defense analysts announced their findings. They believe that there is an Al-Quaeda conspiracy to completely dessicate Lake Erie with tons of silica packets removed from the toes of unsold shoes at Kmart by a previously unknown cell of terrorists over the last 12 years. Citizens are urged to go about their daily business without fear, but should keep their eyes out for suspicious behavior, including the arrival of unexplained convoys of dump trucks near the Lake Erie shoreline. Law enforcement officials are also on the lookout for foot fetishists of Middle-Eastern descent.
