The War On Evil - President George W. Bush's insights on evil

Help President Junior decide who the next enemy in the war against evil should be with our newest poll!

President Bush has made the objective of his war clear: to rid the world of evil. Unfortunately, exactly how the President intends to accomplish this objective remains unclear. In general, Americans agree with Bush that evil is, by definition, a bad thing. However, they disagree about what evil is. Some Americnas consider jaywalking a small evil. Others regard George W. Bush himself as an evil man. Does it follow that our commander-in-chief has declared a war against himself?

It goes without saying that President Bush is waging a war against what he personally regards to be evil. The question remains: what does he consider to be evil? The President has used his wartime authority to speak about his crusade against evil many times. His comments about evil are listed in the archive below.

One would hope that with two and a half months to elucidate his ideas about the enemy evil against which this war is being waged, President Bush would have come up with a clear definition of what exactly he considers evil to be. After all, when one is waging a war, it's a good idea to clearly understand who the enemy is. Unfortunately, Bush's ideas about evil remain cryptic and muddled. He has commented that the hijackers of September 11 were "instruments of evil" who belonged to a "cult of evil" that in some strange dark way feeds "on human suffering." At times, President Bush seems to imply, with references to "the evil one" that he is using the United States military to fight against Satan himself. Such references suggest that the President may regard the current conflict in Biblical, even apolcalyptic terms.

Only by studying Bush's own statements about evil can the American public hope to understand what the President truly believes this war to be about. As an entire nation is pulled deeper into the President's crusade, such an understanding will become increasingly vital.

The Archive of Bush's Evil

I asked them the other day, would it be okay if I cut a 30-minute tape, a piece of propaganda, no questions, just here -- here it is, here's 30 minutes of me talking; please run it, not only across your airwaves but run it internationally, if you don't mind; I've got something to say about the conflict and our fight against evil.

President George W. Bush - 11/13

It is also a reminder of the great purpose of our great land, and that is to rid this world of evil and terror. The evil ones have roused a might nation, a mighty land. And for however long it takes, I am determined that we will prevail.

President George W. Bush - 11/12

Our nations share an urgent mission, which is to stop and defeat terrorism wherever it may exist. That mission is not directed against those who practice Islam. That mission is directed against evil people.

President George W. Bush - 11/10

The only thing I know certain about him is that he's evil. And I don't know what to believe about him, except that he wants to hurt Americans.

President George W. Bush - 11/10

In a second world war, we learned there is no isolation from evil. We affirmed that some crimes are so terrible they offend humanity, itself. And we resolved that the aggressions and ambitions of the wicked must be opposed early, decisively, and collectively, before they threaten us all. That evil has returned, and that cause is renewed.

President George W. Bush - 11/10

We're confident, too, that history has an author who fills time and eternity with his purpose. We know that evil is real, but good will prevail against it. This is the teaching of many faiths, and in that assurance we gain strength for a long journey.

President George W. Bush - 11/10

I think there is one universal law, and that's terrorism is evil, and all of us must work to reject evil. Murder is evil, and we must reject murder.

President George W. Bush - 11/9

America faces an evil and a determined enemy.

President George W. Bush - 11/9

None of us would ever wish the evil that has been done to our country, yet we have learned that out of evil can come great good.

President George W. Bush - 11/8

We know that we're fighting evil. And the American people are patient. They've heard the call.

President George W. Bush - 11/8

This is an evil man that we're dealing with. And I wouldn't put it past him to develop evil weapons to try to harm civilization as we know it.

President George W. Bush - 11/6

Given the means, our enemies would be a threat to every nation and, eventually, to civilization itself. So we're determined to fight this evil, and fight until we're rid of it. We will not wait for the authors of mass murder to gain the weapons of mass destruction. We act now, because we must lift this dark threat from our age and save generations to come.

President George W. Bush - 11/6

Our war that we now fight is against terror and evil... Our struggle is going to be long and difficult. But we will prevail. We will win. Good will overcome evil.

President George W. Bush - 11/2

We don't share the point of view that evil is religious. We don't appreciate the fact that somebody has tried to hijack a religion in order to justify terror activities.

President George W. Bush - 11/2

I don't accept the excuse that poverty promotes evil. That's like saying poor people are evil people. I disagree with that. Osama bin Laden is an evil man. His heart has been so corrupted that he's willing to take innocent life. And we are fighting evil, and we will continue to fight evil, and we will not stop until we defeat evil.

President George W. Bush - 11/2

We're also fighting a war overseas, with the purpose of hunting down the evildoers and bringing them to justice. And I'm patient and I'm focused, and I will not yield. We must win.

President George W. Bush - 10/31

This is a fabulous nation. The evil ones thought they could affect the spirit of America, but it's had an opposite effect.

President George W. Bush - 10/31

The events of these seven weeks have shown something else. They have shown a new generation, your generation, that America and the cause of freedom have determined enemies; that there are people in this world who hate what America stands for. They hate our success, they hate our liberty. We have learned all too suddenly that there are evil people who have no regard for human life, and will do whatever it takes to try to bring this mighty nation to its knees.

President George W. Bush - 10/30

One Rwandan journalist wrote in a condolence book at the U.S. Embassy, "We feel and understand what the Americans must be experiencing. The forces of evil must be fought and defeated wherever they are." That's represents exactly the firm resolve of the American people. We will fight and defeat the forces of evil wherever they are.

President George W. Bush - 10/29

We are at the beginning of what I view as a very long struggle against evil. We're not fighting a nation; we're not fighting a religion; we're fighting evil. And we have no choice but to prevail. We're fighting people that hates our values, they can't stand what America stands for. And they really don't like the fact that we exist. And I want to assure you all that we will fight this fight on every front. We will use every resource we have. And there is no doubt in my time -- in my mind -- that in our time, we will prevail. There's no doubt.

President George W. Bush - 10/29

The press often asks me, well, is this the -- is the evil one hiding from us in Afghanistan, the ones who have done this to America? I said, I don't know. We don't know yet. But we do know the evil one who hides thinks in ways that we can't possibly think in America -- so destructive, such a low regard for human life. And anybody who puts anthrax, trying to kill American citizens, shares the same set of values. Whoever has done it shares that same value of evil that we saw on September the 11th.

President George W. Bush - 10/29

Anybody who tries to affect the lives of our good citizens is evil.

President George W. Bush - 10/24

We're fighting evil. We don't fight a religion; we fight evil people.

President George W. Bush - 10/19

President Jiang and the government stand side by side with the American people as we fight this evil force.

President George W. Bush - 10/19

The victims of September 11th were innocent, and this nation will never forget them. The men and women who murdered them were instruments of evil, and they have died in vain.

President George W. Bush - 10/17

We must be strong and we must be decisive. We must stop the evil ones, so our children and grandchildren can know peace and security and freedom in the greatest nation on the face of the Earth... We know we're one people; we know we're one country. We're united from coast to coast by a determination and a firm resolve to see that right prevails.

President George W. Bush - 10/17

And my answer is, there's evil in the world. But we can overcome evil. We're good. We're good-hearted people, and the boys and girls of America are showing the world just that. We don't fight a religion -- no, we fight evil. We respect the Muslim culture. We know Islam is a religion that teaches love and peace and compassion. No, our struggle is against evil people -- evil people that claim they're religious, but are not.

President George W. Bush, October 11

The hijackers were instruments of evil who died in vain. Behind them is a cult of evil which seeks to harm the innocent and thrives on human suffering. Theirs is the worst kind of cruelty, the cruelty that is fed, not weakened, by tears. Theirs is the worst kind of violence, pure malice, while daring to claim the authority of God. We cannot fully understand the designs and power of evil. It is enough to know that evil, like goodness, exists. And in the terrorists, evil has found a willing servant.

President George W. Bush, October 11

Now is the time to draw the line in the sand against the evil ones. And this government is committed to doing just that... Our war is against evil... People of all faiths, all religions, all areas of our country are united in the common effort to stamp out evil where we find it. It is the right thing to do.

President George W. Bush October 10

People ought to feel comfortable going about their lives, knowing that their government is doing everything humanly possible to disrupt any potential activity that the evil ones may try to inflict upon us.

President George W. Bush October 9

He's seen the reach of terror in a field in his own state. He's a man of compassion who has seen what evil can do. I've given Tom and the Office of Homeland Security a mission: to design a comprehensive, coordinated national strategy to fight terror here at home.

President George W. Bush October 8

I know that many Americans at this time have fears. We've learned that America is not immune from attack. We've seen that evil is real. It's hard for us to comprehend the mentality of people that will destroy innocent folks the way they have. Yet, America is equal to this challenge, make no mistake about it. They've roused a mighty giant.

President George W. Bush October 8

I've got a job to do, and that's to explain to the American people the truth. And the truth is that we're now facing a new threat for freedom; that on September 11th, war was declared on the United States, not by a religious group, not by one country versus another, but by people motivated by evil. And I'm going to make it clear to the world what I made clear to America, that this great country will not let evil stand.

President George W. Bush October 4

We've got nations around the world willing to join us in cutting off the money of the evil ones. Our attitude is, if they can't fund evil deeds, they're not going to be able to affect freedom.

President George W. Bush October 4

This is a war between good and evil. And we have made it clear to the world that we will stand strong on the side of good, and we expect other nations to join us. This is not a war between our world and their world. It is a war to save the world. And people now understand that. And I want to thank you for all your work of making that simple, yet profound, mission clear.

President George W. Bush October 4

Americans must know that their government is doing everything we can to track down every rumor, every hint, every possible evildoer.

President George W. Bush October 3

I know every FEMA employee feels that way. After all, yours was an organization that was used to dealing with, generally, acts of nature -- hurricanes or tornadoes, and fires or floods. And then, all of a sudden, some evil people came and they declared war on America. And your agency and the good-working people, true Americans, had to rise to the occasion.

President George W. Bush September 29

You see, the evildoers like to hit and then they try to hide. And slowly, but surely, we're going to make sure they have no place to hide. Slowly, but surely, we're going to move them out of their holes and what they think is safe havens, and get them on the move.

President George W. Bush September 29

This isn't a conventional war that we're waging. Ours is a campaign that will have to reflect the new enemy. There's no longer islands to conquer or beachheads to storm. We face a brand of evil, the likes of which we haven't seen in a long time in the world.

President George W. Bush September 27

I have told the nation more than once that ours is a war against evil...

President George W. Bush September 26

I consider bin Laden an evil man. And I don't think there's any religious justification for what he has in mind. Islam is a religion of love, not hate. This is a man who hates. This is a man who's declared war on innocent people. This is a man who doesn't mind destroying women and children. This is man who hates freedom. This is an evil man.
Q But does he have political goals?
He has got evil goals. And it's hard to think in conventional terms about a man so dominated by evil that he's willing to do what he thinks he's going to get away with. But he's not going to get away with it.

- Remarks by President George W. Bush in a Meeting with Muslim Community Leaders in The White House, September 26

I see things this way: The people who did this act on America, and who may be planning further acts, are evil people. They don't represent an ideology, they don't represent a legitimate political group of people. They're flat evil. That's all they can think about, is evil. And as a nation of good folks, we're going to hunt them down, and we're going to find them, and we will bring them to justice.

President George W. Bush - September 25

They must have felt like they could diminish our soul. But quite the opposite has taken place. They've strengthened the spirit of America.

President George W. Bush - September 25

Make no mistake about it: This is good versus evil. These are evildoers. They have no justification for their actions. There's no religious justification, there's no political justification. The only motivation is evil.

President George W. Bush - September 25

It's a war against evil people who conduct crimes against innocent people.

President George W. Bush September 19

My administration has a job to do, and we're going to do it. We will rid the world of the evil-doers. We will call together freedom loving people to fight terrorism, and on on this day of - on the Lord's Day, I say to my fellow Americans, thank you for your prayers, thank you for your compassion, thank you for your love for one another. And tomorrow when you get back to work, work hard like you always have. But we've been warned. We've been warned there are evil people in this world. We've been warned so vividly - and we'll be alert. Your government is alert. The governors and mayors are alert that evil folks still lurk out there.

President George W. Bush September 16

This is a new kind of -- a new kind of evil. And we understand. And the American people are beginning to understand. This crusade, this war on terrorism is going to take a while.

President George W. Bush September 16

Just three days removed from these events, Americans do not yet have the distance of history. But our responsibility to history is already clear: to answer these attacks and rid the world of evil.

President George W. Bush September 14

This will be a monumental struggle of good versus evil. But good will prevail.

President George W. Bush September 12

Tonight, I ask for your prayers for all those who grieve, for the children whose worlds have been shattered, for all whose sense of safety and security has been threatened. And I pray they will be comforted by a power greater than any of us, spoken through the ages in Psalm 23: "Even though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I fear no evil, for You are with me."

President George W. Bush September 11
