Earth's Irregular Oceans:News on the Ecological Crisis Brewing Beneath the Waves It's not anything you'd notice by taking a walk on the beach, but Earth's oceans are in serious trouble. Overfishing, pollution, dead zones, coral die off, and global warming are leading our planet's marine ecosystems into a near catastrophe. The oceans are not impervious. Earlier in Earth's history, there have been mass extinctions in the ocean, with almost all species of ocean life dying out. The difference back then is that there were no humans depending on the sea for their survival, and certainly no human civilization stripping the sea of all the resources that could be found. An event like Hurricane Katrina dredges up ancient concepts of the sea as humanity's enemy, but in truth, it is humanity that is attacking the oceans. If we fail to reverse the environmental catastrophe that our industrial habits have been moving us toward, very few of us may survive to tell the tale. The following are articles that the Irregular Times writers have created in order to highlight the growing marine ecological crisis. It's our attempt to sound an alarm, while an alarm can still make a difference.
