Who would have thought that defending science would ever become a vital political issue? Science has brought health, prosperity, security and enlightenment to the American people. Yet, in the last few decades, groups of extremists have launched a campaign to undermine science and make scientific research subservient to political agendas and religious doctrines.
During the years of George W. Bush, the White House has done everything in its power to attack the integrity of scientific research. Eager to please the fringe elements of the Religious Right, Republican politicians have demanded that scientific studies be rewritten to fit with "conservative" political theories. When government scientists have complained of such activities, they've been fired. Funding for research has been slashed at the same time that government funding for anti-religious advocacy groups has skyrocketed. Radical religious sects declared open "war" on science. In Kansas, they replaced biology classes with religious indoctrination courses. Pseudoscience replaced the real thing. The voices of Americans who know the difference were drowned out by the unison voice of true believers.
Barack Obama has since taken office as the 44th President of the United States, but there's a lot of damage to be undone. The Obama administration needs to be pressured to take science as seriously in practice as the Obama campaign did in speech. Especially where science connects to the environment, the record so far is far from perfect.
Yes, science needs defending very badly. The values of reason, mental discipline, and fact-based action are on the wane in America, so we made the following bumper stickers, shirts, and other items to help you stand up for the place of science in a healthy American republic.
